Veer Narayan Singh, the first martyr of Chhattisgarh
In the year 1856, there was a severe famine in Chhattisgarh. Veer Narayan Singh distributed food grains from his godown to the people, but that was not enough. Zamindar Narayan Singh demanded grain from a merchant named Makhan of Shivrinarayan but he turned down the request of Narayan Singh. Narayan Singh along with some farmers reached the godown of Makhan and captured it. When the British got information about this incident, an order was issued to arrest Narayan Singh. He was arrested on 24 October 1856 and put in Raipur Jail. Revolutionary Surendra Sai of Sambalpur had good relations with Narayan Singh. With the help of the soldiers, he managed to escape from jail.
After reaching Sonakhan, Narayan Singh formed an army of 500 people. On November 20 1857, Lieutenant Smith, Assistant Commissioner of Raipur, along with 4 Zamindars and 53 Dafadars marched to Sonakhan. His army camped at Kharaud and sent a message to Bilaspur for additional help. Smith’s army near Sonakhan was attacked by Narayan Singh from the mountainside. Smith suffered heavy losses and he had to retreat. Meanwhile, additional army aid from Katangi reached Smith. With increased strength, he started surrounding the hill on which Narayan Singh was standing. Firing continued throughout the day from both sides and Narayan Singh’s bullets started running out. Narayan Singh surrendered and then he was put in Raipur jail. The trial proceeded and he was hanged on December 10, 1857.
